Bariatric and Metabolism Surgery

Bariatric and metabolism surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is a field of surgery that focuses on the treatment of obesity and metabolic disorders. These surgical procedures aim to help individuals achieve significant and sustained weight loss, improve overall health, and manage associated metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea.

Here are some common types of bariatric and metabolism surgeries:
Gastric Bypass Surgery: Gastric bypass surgery is one of the most common and effective weight loss procedures. It involves creating a small pouch at the top of the stomach and rerouting a portion of the small intestine to connect to the pouch. This reduces the amount of food you can eat and limits the absorption of nutrients, resulting in weight loss.

Sleeve Gastrectomy: In this procedure, a large portion of the stomach is removed, leaving behind a smaller, banana-shaped sleeve or pouch. The reduced stomach size restricts the amount of food you can consume, leading to weight loss. Additionally, this surgery may affect hormonal signals that regulate appetite and metabolism.

Adjustable Gastric Banding: In this procedure, an inflatable band is placed around the upper part of the stomach, creating a smaller pouch. The band can be adjusted to control the size of the opening between the pouch and the rest of the stomach, regulating the amount of food intake. This procedure is reversible and does not involve stomach cutting or rerouting of the intestines.

Whipple Procedure: The Whipple procedure, also known as a pancreaticoduodenectomy, is a complex surgical procedure performed to treat certain pancreatic conditions, including pancreatic cancer. It involves the removal of the head of the pancreas, part of the small intestine, the gallbladder, and the bile duct. The remaining parts of the pancreas and the digestive tract are then reconstructed.

Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (BPD/DS): This is a more complex surgery that involves two components. Firstly, a sleeve gastrectomy is performed to reduce stomach size. Then, a portion of the small intestine is bypassed to limit the absorption of calories and nutrients. BPD/DS offers significant weight loss and metabolic improvements, but it carries a higher risk of nutritional deficiencies.
