Pancreatic Cancer Surgery

Pancreatic cancer surgery is a treatment option for patients with pancreatic cancer, a type of cancer that starts in the pancreas. The goal of surgery is to remove the tumor and, if possible, all cancerous cells in the area. The suitability of surgery as a treatment option depends on various factors, such as the stage of cancer, the location of the tumor, and the overall health of the patient.

There are different types of surgical procedures used for pancreatic cancer, including:
  • Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy): This is the most common surgery for pancreatic cancer. It involves removing the head of the pancreas, the gallbladder, a portion of the bile duct, the duodenum, and sometimes a portion of the stomach. After these structures are removed, the remaining parts are reconnected to allow for digestion.
  • Distal pancreatectomy: This procedure involves removing the tail and body of the pancreas. Sometimes, the spleen is also removed. It is typically performed when the tumor is located in the body or tail of the pancreas.
  • Total pancreatectomy: In this surgery, the entire pancreas, including the head, body, and tail, is removed. The spleen, gallbladder, part of the stomach, and nearby lymph nodes may also be removed. This procedure is less common and is usually considered when the tumor involves the entire pancreas.

The surgical approach can be either open surgery or minimally invasive surgery, such as laparoscopic or robotic-assisted techniques. The choice of approach depends on factors such as the tumor's location, the patient's overall health, and the surgeon's expertise.

Liver Resection: In cases where a part of the liver needs to be removed, the surgeon carefully dissects the liver tissue around the lesion and uses specialized techniques to control bleeding. The diseased portion of the liver is then removed, and the remaining healthy liver tissue is carefully reconstructed and sealed using sutures or staples.

It's important to note that not all pancreatic cancers can be surgically removed. The decision to proceed with surgery depends on several factors, including the size and location of the tumor, whether it has spread to nearby structures or distant organs, and the patient's overall health. In some cases, surgery may be combined with other treatments like chemotherapy or radiation therapy to improve outcomes.

If you or someone you know is facing pancreatic cancer, it is crucial to consult with a qualified oncologist or a surgical oncologist who can evaluate the individual case and provide appropriate guidance and treatment options.

Conversion to Open Surgery: In some cases, laparoscopic liver surgery may need to be converted to open surgery during the procedure due to technical challenges, extensive disease involvement, or the surgeon's judgment to ensure the best outcome for the patient. The decision to convert to open surgery is made based on the safety and effectiveness of the procedure.
